The Handwritten Holiday Message
The following year, President Coolidge softened even more and finally replied to the many requests for a Christmas greeting from him. As usual, on Christmas Eve, he pressed the golden button that turned the stately spruce tree on the Ellipse into a conical pillar of 500 brilliant flashing lights and 2,000 reflecting jewels. The more elaborate lighting and decorations on the tree in 1927 were undertaken by the Electric League of Washington in cooperation with the General Electric Co. So as not to distract from the effectiveness of his Christmas Day message, the President addressed the crowd only as "Fellow Americans" and then lit the tree. |
